The NextGen Precision Health Discovery Series provides learning opportunities for UM System faculty and staff across disciplines, the statewide community and our other partners to learn about the scope of precision health research and identify potential collaborative opportunities. The series consists of monthly lectures geared toward a broad multidisciplinary audience so all can participate and appreciate the spectrum of precision health efforts.

The Ethics of Precision Health
Speaker: Jill Delston, PhD
Description
In this presentation, Dr. Delston shared an account of the ethics of precision medicine that can explain both its possibilities and limits. Creating a new conceptual and normative model of the ethics of precision health can ensure that good medicine is also excellent and that excellent medicine is also good by providing a resource to scientists and clinicians.
Dr. Delston proposed a new conceptual analysis of precision health that explains that precision health should be defined primarily by targeted medical interventions and not by stratification. Additionally, failure to be adequately responsive to this conceptual analysis explains common ethical abuses in the field which will pave the way for future research. Thus, abuses in precision health research and care can be limited while opening new avenues to help historically oppressed communities.
About the Speaker 
Jill B. Delston is associate teaching professor of philosophy at UMSL. Her monograph, out now with Lexington Books, is entitled, Medical Sexism: Contraception Access, Reproductive Medicine, and Health Care. Delston is the co-editor of a textbook entitled Applied Ethics: A Multicultural Approach, Eds. 5, 6, and 7 (forthcoming). She has won UMSL's Legendary Triton Award, the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award, the College of Arts and Sciences NTT Faculty Member of the Year, and just finished her University of Missouri System Presidential Engagement Fellowship. She received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis. Before joining the department in 2012, she was visiting assistant professor of philosophy at Mount Holyoke College.
