The NextGen Precision Health Discovery Series provides learning opportunities for UM System faculty and staff across disciplines, the statewide community and our other partners to learn about the scope of precision health research and identify potential collaborative opportunities. The series consists of monthly lectures geared toward a broad multidisciplinary audience so all can participate and appreciate the spectrum of precision health efforts.
Information about this talk, including continuing education, is available below.

Geospatial AI-When Location Science Meets Precision Health
Speaker: Dr. Chi-Ren Shyu, Director of the Institute for Data Science & Informatics
Paul K. & Dianne Shumaker Professor, College of Engineering
Date: Nov. 16, 2022, noon-1 p.m.
Description
Enabling the use of spatial context is vital to understanding today’s complex digital health problems beyond visualizing maps and intuitive observations. It is paramount to build a robust geospatial artificial intelligence (AI) capacity to integrate social, environmental and infrastructural knowledge base to empower health researchers’ use of geospatial context to promptly answer health issues. With this talk, Dr. Shyu presented recent geospatial AI works from his lab with applications in telemedicine catchment, health disparities, environmental health, biosecurity and risk assessment in pandemic preparation for resilience and mitigation. He also introduced geospatial resources from MU, regional and international collaborators.
About the Speaker
Dr. Shyu is Paul K. and Dianne Shumaker Professor in Biomedical Informatics in the College of Engineering and directs the MU Institute for Data Science and Informatics. His research encompasses health care, explainable artificial intelligence, quantum computing and spatial big data analytics. Dr. Shyu collaborates with clinicians to develop innovative computational methods with health care applications to address research questions in autism, cancer, COVID-19, lymphedema and type 1 diabetes. He serves as a Research Council member for Taylor Geospatial Institute, MU representative for SEC AI Curriculum Consortium and general chair for the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering. Dr. Shyu is an elected of the Fellow of American Medical Informatics Association and a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award, a 2016 UM System President Leadership Award and a 2022 Faculty Alumni Award from the Mizzou Alumni Association.
