About the Speaker
Nathan Winn is a Assistant Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition at Vanderbilt University. His research focuses on understanding the physiological and molecular connections between immunometabolism in adipose tissue and metabolic disease. Throughout his training, Winn has examined how factors such as environmental temperature, exercise, and nutrient cycling influence energy metabolism and nutrient regulation. Winn’s research often uses these factors as experimental stimuli to reveal metabolic mechanisms that may not be visible under resting conditions. Using translational mouse models, his work has shown that weight cycling can disrupt β-cell compensation, leading to impaired insulin secretion and increased glucose intolerance in obesity. His current research aims to identify the underlying mechanisms that reduce the ability of β-cells to adapt during periods of weight regain.
About the Seminar Series
Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders. As the primary site of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, skeletal muscle plays a central role in whole-body glucose homeostasis. A major conceptual advance over the past decade has been the recognition that obesity-induced remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) can lead to excessive activation of integrin receptors, initiating signaling pathways that contribute to skeletal muscle insulin resistance. This talk will discuss emerging mechanisms by which the ECM–integrin–cytoskeleton axis regulates glucose uptake and metabolism in skeletal muscle, and how dysregulation of this signaling network may promote metabolic disease.
