About the Speaker
Dr. Zhihua Jiang is a Professor of Genome Biology at Washington State University, with over 35 years of global experience in higher education, including academic programs in China and Croatia, and professorships in China, Canada, and the USA. His contemporary research is focused on developing the central dogma of phenomics, which he defines as an independent discipline to study the full set of phenotypes (phenome) over an organism's lifespan to fully characterize its genome. Using state-of-the-art genomics and transcriptomics, combined with bioinformatics, his lab specifically utilizes RNA variants (both coding and non-coding, acting as "hardware" or "software") to bridge the gap between the genome and the resulting phenome, finding answers to the biological question of how diverse phenotypes are orchestrated by the same genome. The ultimate goal of his work, which has earned him distinctions like a Fulbright Scholarship and multiple U.S. patents for genetic markers, is to create Genomically Optimized Livestock Farming (GOLF) systems to ensure sustainable food security by promoting healthy animals and products.
About the IRHG Seminar Series
The goal of the Interdisciplinary Reproduction & Health Group (IRHG) Seminar Series is to highlight transdisciplinary precision research taking place in the reproductive health field, provide opportunities for collaboration among researchers to build their own research efforts and promote clinical/researcher activity across the University of Missouri System and our partners.
The IRHG was organized and established through a faculty-driven, grass roots effort in 2016 to develop an integrative interdisciplinary program that transcends traditional departmental, college and system boundaries to foster excellence in reproduction, health research and education at Mizzou.
