About the Speaker
Nerissa Viola, Ph.D., is a researcher in the Department of Oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Her work focuses on theranostic drug development and the creation of quantitative molecular imaging biomarkers that help assess how tumors respond to treatment. Viola’s research group develops innovative imaging agents designed to study tumor biology and detect cancers such as breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancer through image-guided techniques. Her lab specifically works on designing imaging probes that can visualize molecular changes during tumor development and after therapy. These probes are intended to support precision medicine by helping clinicians better monitor treatment response and tailor therapies for individual patients. Through her research, Viola has contributed to the development of PET radiotracers that target oncogenic biomarkers and immune signals, including CD3, IFN-γ, CD8, EGFR, HER2, and HER3, which can provide deeper insight into cancer progression and treatment effectiveness.
About the Seminar Series
The goal of the NextGen Precision Health & Ellis Fischel Cancer Center Science Seminar is to highlight transdisciplinary precision research taking place in the cancer field, provide opportunities for collaboration among researchers to build their own research efforts and promote clinical/researcher activity across the University of Missouri System and our partners.
